In partnership and support with neighbourhood groups, local housing development strategies are being implemented in a manner to facilitate capacity and community participation.
With over 20 years of experience in delivering housing, WHRC has positioned itself to provide its technical and financial expertise in delivering community-based housing. Community-based housing is all about the community deciding what type of homes are needed and the housing priorities of the community. Within the constraints of government policy and financial viability, WHRC has adopted this principle as a quiding goal in our efforts to develop local housing in the inner city.
The community leaders decide which streets to tackle, which homes to buy first. Residents even help us in deciding the layouts, colors, and type of building materials. Families are selected with the participation of the residents in each neighborhood. Community participation leads to better local understanding of the housing revitalization process. This leads to better decision making at the local level, and better understanding by the residents on how various factors, including government policy, help weigh planning principles, shape and form the type of neighbourhoods in which they reside.
