WHRC Wins Award!

WHRC is pleased to announce that the redevelopment of Flora Place was selected as one of 16 projects to receive the 2008 CMHC Housing Award.

The CMHC Housing Awards Program was created in 1988 to identify, recognize, showcase and share best practices that have helped to improve the quality, choice and affordability of housing in Canada. Every second year, the Program honours the people and organizations creating affordable housing solutions across Canada and helps share their best practices with communities across the country.

Come See Canad Inn's Winter Wonderland!

WHRC tenants are invited to go on a bus trip to see Canad Inn's Winter Wonderland on Thursday, December 11, 2008. See over one million lights and over 29 different themed areas during the 2.5 km drive.

The bus leaves 60 Frances Street at 5:30 PM and return by 7:30 PM. There is no charge to attend but you do need to call and reserve your spot as seating is limited. Please call 228-5518 for your ticket or visit the office at 60 Frances.

How to Save on Utility Bills

The utility bills for your unit are your sole responsibility during your tenancy. How much you pay for utilities depends on how much you are consuming. There are many ways to reduce consumption, including the following:

  • Keep your thermostat low (20-23 degrees Celsius) so your unit is comfortable and warm, but not two warm.
  • Turn the heat down (not off) during the day (18-20 degrees Celsius) if you are away from unit, and at night when going to bed.
  • During winter months, leave your drapes open during sunny days to let in natural light and heat, and close the drapes at night to help protect against heat loss.
  • Turn off lights that are not in use, and when leaving a room.
  • Use lower watt light bulbs wherever possible, or use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Do not allow children to play with small electrical appliances, and don't leave them running when not in use.
  • Call the office for repairs of leaking taps or pipes, or running toilets as soon as you notice them.
  • Never use the oven for heating the unit, or for anything but cooking. Leaving the oven door open consumes excess power and creates danger for children. Turn it off as soon as you are finished cooking.

Christmas Hamper Winners

Congratulations to our food hamper winners. Dave Galbraith won the hamper for an individual or couple. Stephanie Spence and her family won the family food hamper. The draw was open to WHRC tenants.

November 2008

Win a Food Hamper!

WHRC is going to give away two holiday food hampers to WHRC tenants. The draw is open to all WHRC tenants who have their rent paid up-to-date. Only one entry per unit will be eligible to win. One draw will be held for a family and the other for an individual or couple. The draw for the food hamper will be held on Friday, November 21. The winners will be announced in December's newsletter.

Dress for the Weather

  • Dress appropriately before going outdoors. It does not have to be below freezing for someone to experience cold emergencies such as hypothermia and frostbite. Wind speed can create dangerously cold conditions even when the temperature is not that low.
  • Dress in layers so you can adjust to changing conditions. Most of your body heat is lost through your head so wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears.
  • Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves.

Christmas Cheer Board Hampers

Tenants interested in ordering a hamper from the Christmas Cheer Board can do so starting

  • November 12 and up until December 22. Both families and individuals can contact the Cheer Board. See below to know which number to cal.
  • For those on Employment & Income Assistance (Social Assistance) you can call 948-2022 with your case number, Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM November 12 - December 22.
  • Persons who are employed and/ or low income can call the Cheer Board at 989-5683 (hours below) to see if they are eligible to receive a hamper. Callers will be asked questions regarding their family size, age of children, income (including Child Tax Credit), and expenses such as rent and utilities.

The Cheer Board's hours are:

Monday to Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM from November 12 until December 13. From December 15 - December 19 hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Community Garden

WHRC's Community Garden is having another successful year. The gardens are doing well and the water tank has been a welcome addition.

Our volunteer gardener, Paul Barton, has been working hard keeping the garden area looking great. In addition to the water tank, a herb bed, hanging pots and birdfeeders have been added.

Please keep in mind the garden plots are offered to tenants on a first come first served basis.

If you would like to have a garden plot in 2009 contact, the office or call 228-5518.

Cleaning Tip

The following are two cleaning tips sent in by a WHRC tenant:

TIP# 1:

To clean baked-on foods from dishes or stovetop mix a tablespoon of baking soda with 1/4 tablespoon of dish soap to make a paste. Rub on item and then rinse.

TIP # 2:

Use regular toothpaste to remove tarnish off of silver, brass or copper. Rub toothpaste on item to be cleaned. Do not use a toothbrush as it may scatch some surfaces.

Tips for Parents

Explain how life is going to change for your child. A week prior to the first day, offer a description of the morning routine: "I'll wake you up at 7 o'clock, you need to be dressed by 7:30 for breakfast. I expect you ready with your backpack, lunch and coat to walk out the door at 8 o'clock." Young children need practice.

  • Start getting kids in bed early. Begin a week before school gets underway. You can't force them to sleep, but you can see they're snuggled in bed looking at books.
  • Get yourself up and ready first.
  • Give reminders. Most kids learn the morning routine quickly. Others need reminders until high school graduation: "Son, I think you forgot to brush your teeth."
  • Avoid yelling and harsh treatment. No parent likes sending their child out the door after a screaming match.
  • Tack on an additional task. Once the morning schedule becomes routine, you can add an element: throwing dirty clothes in the hamper, making beds, putting together lunches.

Most children adjust to the new school year after a week, but if after a month your child resists getting up and going to school, it's time to evaluate why. Start by talking to your child's teacher.
